Looking Back Along the Abandoned Rails by Todd Henson

Looking Back Along the Abandoned Rails

A rainy, foggy day. Late October. Standing on the old, abandoned rails, peering into the cloudy and uncertain distance. Looking back, who used to pass this way? Where were they coming from, and where were they traveling to? A light misty rain touches my face, moisture collecting on my beard, as I ponder the history of these rails.

Brief Glimpses of Autumn in Fort Valley, Virginia by Todd Henson

The Colors of Passage Creek

On October 25th, 2025, my father and I went for a drive through Fort Valley, Virginia, to see any of the fall foliage still hanging around. It was a challenging day, exposure-wise, because of the blazingly bright sun and the shadows of the mountains, but I did the best I could to balance the two so you could see a bit of the beauty present in that valley, especially along Passage Creek.

We entered the valley on Fort Valley Road and this time instead of trying one of the winding narrow one-lane dirt roads we chose to leave the valley via the winding but paved two-lane Edinburg Gap Road. Maybe not quite as exciting as the others, but a bit less stressful. 🙂

A Cloudy Morning at the Edge of the Pilot Range, White Mountains, New Hampshire by Todd Henson

A Cloudy Morning at the Edge of the Pilot Range, White Mountains, New Hampshire

I recently showed a photo of evening at the edge of the Pilot Range in Lancaster, New Hampshire, and today I’m showing a very similar view the following morning around sunrise with a sky full of clouds. The scenery is much the same, facing the direction of Northumberland and Stark, with the western edge of the Pilot Range, part of the White Mountains, visible on the right and other mountains such as Cape Horn and Moore Mountain visible towards the left and center. But despite the similarities, the feel of the photo differs because of the lighting and differences in coloration, as well as differences in the character of the clouds in the sky. I very much enjoyed that location and all the variety it offered from day to day.
